REFLECTION

Standardized testing was always part of a student’s life.  In 2001, the implementation of No Child Left Behind created a rush of standardized tests for almost every grade in math and language arts literacy.  Recently, the state of New Jersey has piloted standardized state tests in algebra and biology.  IN 8th grade students must take GEPA focusing on knowledge and skills that will help them pass the HSPA.  HSPA is administered to 11th graders.  Achieving passing scores is necessary for graduation in NJ.

NJTAP-IN is New Jersey’s initiative to support, require and assess the infusion of technology in all curriculum and instructional areas.  Presently, NJ is focusing on assessing 4th and 8th graders in their ability to use technology to solve problems.  It is expected that this assessment will “trickle-up” to high school students.  It is the technology facilitator’s responsibility to provide professional development opportunities and support to infuse technology into the curriculum and to provide opportunities for meaningful activities that intertwine technology with curriculum areas.

The following power point was used during a meeting of the Professional Learning Community assembled consisting of 4th grade teachers, technology teachers, and media specialists to collaborate on units that would reach this goal.

Once the power point was shown, we provided the 8.1 technology assessment checklist.  Each student has one.  It is the responsibility of the classroom teacher, the media specialist and the technology teacher to access students and check the appropriate skills that have been demonstrated.  I provided a source of activities that lend themselves to authentic learning activities in all the core subject areas with a technology and library component.
