All About Karen Manassa-WalsteinCurrently, I am the librarian for Old Bridge High School Main Campus Library. I serve a student population of 10th, 11th and 12th grade students numbering approximately 2,400 students and 150 teachers. I run a student book club and started a faculty/staff book club. During a district's in-service days I, generally, can be found conducting a workshop on a technology related topic. An additional responsibility that I have be given is the technology support representative. I have come to the position in a very round about way, but each road I have taken has added to my knowledge and my ability to effectively do my job. During the 70's and 80's, I was a computer programmer working on business applications on mini-computers. While doing that job I decided I wanted to teach so I enrolled at Rutger's University where I received a Masters in Education. I taught first and third grade in Old Bridge. I became a school librarian when I decided to combine my love of literature with my computer experience and served as the school library media specialist serving K-5th grade students. Three years ago I was fortunate to be moved to the high school. I strongly believe in a quote credited to Mohammed Ali: "Service to others is the payment you make for your space here on earth." To carry out my belief in service to others I run a food pantry in Eatontown, NJ that serves approximately 80 families a month. The West Long Branch Recreation Commission's summer concert series is my brainchild. Every other week we schedule a different band to entertain and bring the community together. My newest endeavor is Rolling Thunder. Their mission is to publicize the POW-MIA issue. They also support veterans' rights. |
